How DPI affects print quality

DPI (dots per inch) determines how much detail your image contains at a given print size. A 3000 x 2000px image printed at 8x10 inches gives you 300 DPI — the professional standard. Print it at 20x30 and the DPI drops to around 100, which will look noticeably soft. This tool does that math for every standard print size automatically.

Phone photos & large prints

Modern smartphones capture 12–50 megapixels, which is often enough for surprisingly large prints. A 12MP photo at roughly 4000 x 3000px can comfortably print at 13x19 inches at 300 DPI, or up to 20x24 at a still-sharp 200 DPI. Upload your photo to find out exactly what your specific image supports.

What "fit %" means

Not every image ratio matches every print size perfectly. Fit percentage shows how closely your image's proportions match a given print size. 100% means no cropping — the image fills the print exactly. 85% means roughly 15% of the image edges will need to be cropped. This helps you choose sizes that showcase your full composition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What DPI do I need for a quality print?
300 DPI is the professional standard and what Printkeg recommends for sharp, gallery-quality results. 200–299 DPI is generally acceptable for prints viewed at normal distance, especially at larger sizes where you stand further back. Below 200 DPI will usually look noticeably soft or pixelated.
Can I print a phone photo as a large poster?
Often yes. Modern smartphones shoot at 12–50 megapixels, which can be enough for 18x24 or even 24x36 prints. The answer depends on your specific photo's pixel dimensions — upload it here to find out exactly what sizes will look sharp.
Why does my image show as "below quality threshold" for some sizes?
Those sizes would require printing at below 200 DPI with your image, which would result in a visibly soft or blurry print. They're shown separately so you know which sizes to avoid rather than ordering something that won't look right.
Does this tool upload or store my photo?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser. Your image is never sent to any server and nothing is stored. Refresh the page and the image is gone.
What's the difference between this and Printkeg's print size calculator?
Printkeg's on-site calculator lets you enter pixel dimensions manually to find print sizes. This tool skips the math — just upload your actual photo and it automatically detects the dimensions and shows you every compatible size at a glance.
